Meet Mia

Trauma can be more than you think.

Most people will experience trauma in their lifetime, whether it is a car accident, abuse or neglect, the sudden death of a loved one, a violent criminal act, exposure to the violence of war, a natural disaster, or a betrayal.

Trauma comes in all types, but its affect is harmful and can impact you profoundly.

While many people recover from trauma over time and bounce back with resiliency, many others experience the effects of lasting trauma, causing a person to live with deep emotional pain, fear, confusion, or post-traumatic stress far after the event has passed.

Trauma can affect your entire life – ask Mia*.

Mia’s story was one filled with such pain. Her mother was an alcoholic, and her father left the family for another woman when she was 12 years old. She didn’t see her father much after that. When her mother was drunk, she would rather not have seen her.

Her mother blamed Mia for the father’s leaving and said they never wanted Mia in the first place. One night, when Mia’s parents were arguing, her mother hit Mia in the face leaving a bruise that lasted for two weeks. The emotional pain lasted much longer.

Later in college, Mia was raped while at a party. She never told anyone and blamed herself for being drunk. When Mia got married, she thought life was going well but never realized what she was bringing into the relationship.

Mia found intimacy very difficult, and she became easily angered or upset at her husband. Trust was difficult, too, because she could never forget finding those texts he sent another woman while they were dating. Mia thought she was over her past. However, all these problems added up, and she was beginning to wonder if all connections in her life were lost.

Therapy can help connect the missing pieces.

Trauma-informed therapy can help you process the events of the past, even intergenerational history (abuse, alcoholism, genocide, slavery).

Through therapy, you can begin to realize how the past is connected to your present problems, allowing you to learn how to cope and respond better to life.

Mia started the journey and resisted re-traumatization while creating a healthier and more adaptive meaning of the experiences in her life. She began experiencing intimacy in a way she never thought possible, which opened the doors for healing that affected every area of her life.

Mia’s self-esteem improved, and her self-talk was now empowering, kind, and hopeful.
